Our Pet First Aid and Disaster Response course is designed to provide pet owners and caregivers with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to common medical emergencies and injuries in pets. Just like humans, pets can face accidents, illnesses, and injuries that require immediate attention, and this course equips participants with the ability to provide prompt and effective first aid for their beloved animals.

 4-Hour Pet First Aid Course Overview

This course provides essential skills and knowledge to help pets in emergencies.

  1. Introduction – Define pet first aid, emergency preparedness, and course objectives. (No skills test)
  2. Preventing Emergencies – Learn common mistakes, behavior training, and early warning signs. (No skills test)
  3. Personal Safety & Animal Handling – Understand body language, restraint, and safe transport techniques. (Skills test included)
  4. Vital Signs – Identify normal vital signs, pulse points, and capillary refill time. (Skills test included)
  5. Responding to Emergencies – Learn emergency response, common pet emergencies, shock care, bleeding control, CPR, and choking intervention. (Skills test included)
  6. Travel & Outdoor Safety – Plan pet-friendly trips, proper ID use, and safety tips for travel and outdoor adventures. (No skills test)
  7. Disaster Action Plans – Prepare for disasters, understand local risks, and create a pet emergency kit. (No skills test)

Final Exam: 20-question test; 80% required to pass.

Pet First Aid Course Overview

This course is designed to educate pet owners and animal caregivers on how to provide immediate and effective first aid to pets in emergencies. Participants will learn preventive measures, safety techniques, and life-saving skills, culminating in a final written exam to assess their knowledge.

Lesson 1: Introduction

Lesson Objectives:

  • Define "pet first aid."
  • Discuss how to prepare in advance for an emergency.
  • Explain the overall course objectives.

Approximate Time: 20 minutes

Lesson 2: Preventing Emergencies

Lesson Objectives:

  • Know the common mistakes to avoid.
  • Understand the importance of behavior training.
  • Recognize early indicator signs and symptoms.

Approximate Time: 5 minutes

Lesson 3: Personal Safety, Restraining, Carrying, and Transporting Animals

Lesson Objectives:

  • Discuss animal body language.
  • Muzzle and restrain an animal.
  • Safely approach, move, and/or transport an animal.

Approximate Time: 30 minutes
Skill Practice Session:

  • Participants will break into small groups and use manikins to practice:
    • Muzzling techniques.
    • Restraint and carrying techniques.
  • Evaluate participant performance and provide remediation if needed.

Lesson 4: Vital Signs

Lesson Objectives:

  • Discuss the range of normal vital signs.
  • Locate the pulse points.
  • Check capillary refill time.

Approximate Time: 15 minutes

Lesson 5: Responding to Emergencies

Lesson Objectives:

  • Describe the steps to safely respond in an emergency.
  • Discuss common pet emergencies.
  • Recognize and care for symptoms of shock.
  • Describe and demonstrate how to control external bleeding.
  • Describe and demonstrate how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Describe and demonstrate how to care for a choking pet.

Approximate Time: 60 minutes
Skill Practice Session:

  • Participants will break into small groups and use manikins to practice:
    • CPR.
    • The Heimlich maneuver.
    • Back blows.
  • Evaluate participant performance and provide remediation if needed.

 

 

Lesson 6: Travel and Outdoor Adventures

Lesson Objectives:

  • Describe the steps to planning an itinerary that includes pets.
  • Explain the importance of proper identification.
  • Discuss special considerations for road trips, airline travel, and outdoor excursions.

Approximate Time: 25 minutes

Lesson 7: Disaster Action Plans

Lesson Objectives:

  • Discuss how to prepare in advance for a disaster.
  • Explain local natural and human-caused risks.
  • List items to include in a disaster kit.

Approximate Time: 45 minutes

Final Written Exam

  • Participants will complete the final written exam.
  • Consists of 20 questions.
  • Participants must achieve a minimum score of 80% to pass the course.

  • Review key concepts from the course.
